What’s with the bizarre rainfall in July? The weather forecast promises more

The Bay Area’s unusual drizzly weather is expected to continue through the weekend and could escalate into isolated thunderstorms late Sunday into Monday, according to the National Weather Service.

The thunderstorms are expected to mostly affect the southern portions of the Bay Area and the central coast, according to Roger Gass, a meteorologist with the weather agency. Locally heavy rain is possible.

While the overall risk is minor, the main concern with the thunderstorms is the potential for lightning, Gass said, which could spark wildfires. The moisture in the air should tamp down that risk, but there’s no guarantee of enough rain to completely quell fire concerns, he noted.

On Twitter, the weather agency urged people to stay “weather aware” and remember “If thunder roars, go indoors!”

Meanwhile, the rest of the Bay Area is expected to continue to see drizzly weather Saturday night into Sunday, adding to an unusually wet series of days this July, which is typically the Bay Area’s driest month, according to the weather service.

Half Moon Bay, for example, is seeing its wettest July since 1975, with nearly a half inch of total rain for the month. according to the weather service. San Francisco is also on track to see its wettest July since 1975 — as of Friday, the downtown total rain for the month was at 0.09 inches, tying with July 2015’s number. One more tenth of an inch will make it the wettest July in almost five decades.

Jeff Lorber, another meterologist with the weather service, said that the amount of moisture in the air on Saturday was “pretty impressive for this time of year.”

But after Monday, more “seasonable weather conditions will prevail,” Gass said. That means low clouds in the morning and night giving way to sunny conditions in the afternoon, with temperatures near seasonal averages — 60s and 70s near the coast with 80s and 90s in the interior.
